Set in the early twentieth century, Emily of Emerald Hill by Singaporean Stella Kon tells the story of the matriarch of an affluent Peranakan family. Abandoned by her mother as a poor girl after her father walks off with another woman, she later comes to marry the eldest son of a magnate.
