  • Peter Shaffer’s Equus was first performed in 1973 to audiences stunned by the play’s gripping drama and depiction of a boy who commits a cruel and violent crime. Why did he do it? What can bring an ordinary boy from a loving home to commit such a brutal act? Equus is regarded as one of the greatest plays of the modern age and was recently given a high profile revival on Broadway and the West End staring Daniel Radcliffe from Harry Potter.

Equus is the story of psychiatrist Martin Dysart seeking to understand the mystery that leads Alan Strang, a seventeen-year-old boy, to be under his psychiatric care after Alan blinds six horses in a stable he works at on weekends. Both men force each other to question the legitimacy of their passion, or lack thereof.  Through their therapy sessions, Alan reveals how his secret worship brings him to a state of ecstasy most people can only dream of achieving in their lives bogged down by convention and social constraints. During his ritual midnight rides, naked in a field surrounded by mist, Allan’s act of worship to the horse god Equus brings him to encounter a sense of liberation most can only dream of. Dysart, when faced with a passionate worshipper, comes to understand what he is lacking in his own empty passionless life.

Equus' themes of worship, sacrifice and ritual reveal that no single act, even the most horrific, can be judged solely in black and white, but is the catalyst to examine the complexity of the grey areas in between. Here, in this gripping psychodrama, both men face the truth about their situation.
