This is a new script where the original Beggar’s Opera by John Gay was incorporated into the Three Penny Opera that was adapted from it by Elizabeth Hauptman and directed by Brecht.
Set in London at the coronation of Queen Victoria, the brutal highwayman Macheath, commonly known as Mack the Knife, has returned to London to run his gang and woo Polly Peachum, the daughter of the Beggar King in a sham marriage to get his vast sums of cash. Peachum and his wife try and thwart Macheath’s plot with the help of Pirate Jenny who runs the towns prostitutes. They are both assisted and thwarted by the corrupt police force and disgruntled gang members, the musical play is outrageously funny and politically thought provoking with its comments on modern society and struggle of living on the edge of society.
