Medea takes place in the port city of Corinth at the end of the mythological era in ancient Greece, the time of Gods is ending and the age of man is just beginning.
Jason and the Argonauts travelled to Colchis at the very ends of the earth in search of the golden fleece, a magical symbol of regeneration that was kept by King Aeẻtes of Colchis and guarded by magical charms and labours, the last of which was a fire breathing dragon. Medea was the High Priestess in the Temple of Hecate and the granddaughter of the Sun God, Helios. Famed for her skills in magic and witchcraft, she assisted Jason, who she fell in love with, and escaped back to Greece with him from what was considered her own brutal homeland.
After assisting Jason in his quest for the fleece and in escaping several dangers on the voyage back, Medea and her two young sons are abandoned by Jason while they are living in the city of Corinth, known at the time as the crossroads of the world. Jason, who is the son of a king and heir to the kingdom of Thessaly, is seen as a strong ally for King Creon of Corinth and he marries his daughter Glauce to Jason in a ceremony that has been kept from Medea’s knowledge until the night before when she discovered the preparations being made by a servant. Following a loud and aggressive argument between the (until now) happy couple, Medea storms out of the house in a rage carrying only Jason’s sword (which she had been threatening him with) and takes refuge in the Fallen temple of Aphrodite. She is followed there by her fellow Argonauts and attendants, Apollonius and Atalanta, along with the children.
What Follows is the tragic results of love gone wrong and the ramifications of decisions and actions that are taken in the throws of passion.
