In 1900, on a hot Australian summer’s day, three schoolgirls and their teacher are swallowed by the haunting monoliths of Hanging Rock. Today, five performers try to imagine what it felt like, to step into that yawning portal into hell itself.
Tom Wright’s adaptation of the classic Australian Gothic tale immerses itself into an atmosphere of dread and mystery, epitomizing why so many were willing to believe that Lindsay’s novel was in fact true, and why such a story remains relevant to this day. An exploration of vivid Australian imagery, delivered through prose poetry, this retelling of Picnic at Hanging Rock is steeped in yearning, regret, and growth.
