The Tempest

by William Shakespeare and adapted by Steen

10th - 25th November 2017

  • A new production of Shakespeare’s most musical play, The Tempest. Originally written as a musical masque, we have had a new score commissioned by local composer Jeremy Boulton with masks and costumes created by mask artist and Artistic Director Steen.

The setting is a rocky island in the middle of the Mediterranean, where Prospero the exiled Duke of Milan and his daughter have been shipwrecked for twelve years. While on the island they have had the Hag Born slave Caliban as a servant and the ethereal Ariel with his band of spirits to do Prospero’s magical bidding. After their long exile the Antonio, treacherous brother of Prospero and the King of Naples, are shipwrecked in a magical storm and are placed for Prospero to either take his revenge on them or find forgiveness in his heart.

The play is a comedy and is played as such with many tender, thrilling and spectacular moments, not least of which the masque scene to celebrate a union of Ferdinand the young prince and Prospero’s daughter, Miranda.
