In March 2007 the final sale of the Former Bridge Street Theatre to Vox FM was finalised. Vox was given the site as its new home with the condition that it ensures the theatre re open and remain an operating theatre. To ensure this and also to guarantee that the theatre did not impact on the running of the station the board instructed that the theatre become its own separate entity. To this purpose the Phoenix Theatre Incorporated was set up in June 2007 and the theatre space was licensed to them in a formal agreement.
The licence states that the two organisations are independent of each other and the Phoenix Theatre Incorporated will remain in the space on condition that it ensures the theatre remains open and the conditions set by council are met.
The Phoenix Theatre incorporated now has the opportunity to build a community theatre space that will benefit the whole region and become a focal point for community theatre and performance based activity, bridging the gap between established community companies with their own home and professional performance focused at the Illawarra Performing Arts Centre.
The name “The Phoenix Theatre” is symbolic of the theatres rising out of the ashes of the former Bridge Theatre but also the Qualities of the mythical bird are very similar to the qualities we hope the theatre will come to represent, the theatre is not just a building.
This
website will keep everyone informed on the progress of
the rise of the Phoenix.
